Diskit and Hunder
Diskit is the service centre and home to the important monastery above the valley. Hunder has the dunes, Bactrian camel rides and many stays. Early and late light are quieter than the busy middle of the day.
Turtuk
Turtuk is culturally distinctive and deserves a full excursion or its own night. Lanes pass homes, orchards and working fields; travel as a respectful guest, not as if the village were a staged attraction.
Sumur and Panamik
The quieter side suits travellers interested in villages and Samstanling Monastery. The wider valley, settlement and pace are more rewarding than treating the hot spring as the only objective.
How long to stay
One night covers Diskit and Hunder. Two allow Turtuk or the Sumur side. A third suits photographers and slow travellers continuing toward Pangong.
Local realities
Carry cash, warm layers and essential medicines. Network and electricity vary. Confirm the Shyok road on the actual travel date; a route printed in an itinerary is not proof of access.
