The journey
Approaches usually come from Leh across Chang La or from Nubra through the Shyok corridor when open. Both are long mountain days. Water colour changes with cloud, angle and wind.
Where to stay
Seasonal camps and guesthouses operate around accessible settlements. Expect simpler bathrooms, limited power and cold nights. Choose a legitimate property with responsible waste and water arrangements.
Altitude and weather
The lake is substantially higher than Leh. Wind makes evenings cold even in summer. Travellers with unresolved altitude symptoms should not ascend. Keep layers and medicine in the vehicle.
Responsible travel
Do not drive off established tracks, approach wildlife, leave plastic or wash at the shore. Avoid loud music and excessive night lighting. The landscape is fragile.
How many nights
One is enough for most first trips. Two suit photographers who are already well acclimatised. A same-day Leh return is tiring and misses the quietest hours.
