Zanskar Valley Travel Guide

Zanskar is not an add-on to a six-day holiday. It is a journey in its own right, built around long roads, living villages and deep mountain geography.

Reaching Zanskar

Connections have evolved rapidly, but construction, weather and surfaces remain variable. Kargil and Suru form the traditional approach; newer roads can link other sectors. Confirm overnight and fuel plans immediately before travel.

Padum and monasteries

Padum is the service base. Karsha, Sani, Stongde and nearby villages form the cultural core. A knowledgeable guide adds context and helps visitors follow monastery etiquette.

Phugtal

Phugtal is not a roadside photo stop. Access involves a trail whose start point and duration depend on the road and season. Use a local guide, begin early and avoid promising it on a tight transfer day.

Time required

Allow at least five to seven days beyond a standard Leh circuit. Compressing Zanskar increases fatigue and removes resilience for delays.

Mountain information changes

Confirm weather, roads, permits, prices and local instructions near departure.
